At seventeen, Caleb O’Connor left the isolated island in Maine where he grew up, fleeing tragedy and determined to find a place where a werewolf could run free. For six years he led a werewolf pack in Romania and raised a “cub” as his own son. When the moon wasn’t full, Caleb’s mentor taught him how to harvest the magical powers of the elements, stars, and planets and schooled him in the art of vampire-hunting.
In The Wolf’s Den, Caleb returns home to Bar Harbor, Maine after his mentor’s death at the hands of a vampire. He soon learns of trouble brewing there—mysterious deaths that make him suspect nefarious vampires have infiltrated his home town. Caleb must confront a gang of werewolf bikers, secretive government agents, and vampires preying on tourists, as well as the unsolved deaths of his two best friends.
Caleb needs all the help he can get to stop his vampire nemesis from enslaving humans in the middle of tourist season. Caleb’s gang—his adopted teenaged werewolf son, an orphaned werewolf cub, his only remaining childhood friend, and the guardian who raised him—join the battle. Help comes from unexpected quarters as Caleb fights to right past wrongs, make peace with the wild werewolf pack, and defeat the vampires. Who is an enemy and who is an ally? Caleb must figure this out before he loses more people he loves.
Reviews
Picked up this book at a bed & breakfast in Bar Harbor. It was an enjoyable read, with a bit of a different twist on the werewolf mythology in that the wolves became WOLVES when they transform each month during the full moon, and don’t have a lot of conscious human control over their wolf behavior, or many memories about what they did thereafter. It was enjoyable reading about a place that we were visiting and being able to match places in the book to actual streets and places, the plot and pacing moved at an interesting clip, and the descriptions were well-written without being overdone or cloying. Alas, the local bookstore did not have the first book in this series for me to buy it — boo! Their loss…
Overall, if you enjoy solid werewolf fiction that is neither gruesome horror not sappy romance, pick up this series.

Love the continuation of “Only the Moon Howls”
I love this sequel to “Only the Moon Howls.” Connie Senior has a unique insight into modern day supernatural creatures. They are not only supernatural they are very human and live in our every day world. I love how the main character becomes an adult in this book and then learns how to deal with his past. A scary look at the existence of ancient evil in small town America.

The opening chapters of Connie Senior’s sophomore novel The Wolf’s Den reach out and grab the reader with both claws of the titular character. From there you’re drawn into an all-too-believable netherworld of werewolves and vampires that sits apart from, but certainly adjacent to, the realms of Harry Potter, Twilight and the Buffyverse.

A beautifully crafted fantasy by an author devoted to the genre of fantasy and vampires – and now vampires among us in Maine! Fans of the genre will enjoy escaping into the this exciting world. Even if fantasy is not your thing, you will appreciate the creativity, the setting, and the drama!

Having read the author’s first book, Only the Moon Howls, I was delighted to receive an advance copy of this second book in the series. However, those who have not read the first will still find this book successful as a standalone. A young werewolf, Caleb, has left the troubles of Romania behind to return to his hometown of Bar Harbor, Maine. Parenting younger werewolves, saving his town from a vampire scourge, and managing the politics of werewolf pack, paranormal police, and dubious allies are all in a day’s work for our hero! The prose is descriptive, the dialogue genuine, and the plot engaging. For those who hear “werewolves and vampires” and imagine bodice-ripping romance–this is not that. It’s not a romance at all, in fact, but rather a coming-of-age fantasy suitable for all readers, both young and young at heart.

This book is an exciting page turner and I highly recommend it. The exotic Romanian story from book one now continues in Bar Harbor Maine bringing readers right back to where the story first started. I really enjoyed the transition from old world supernatural creatures to the Maineiac style of supernaturals. There is definitely a culture clash. This story became more complicated as the main character has to come to terms with his old friends (living and dead) and their conflicts, as well as meet and try to befriend a new and tough American werewolf pack. He did all this while taking on a new alliance of old and new world vampires. These vampires were also having misunderstandings and a power struggle amongst themselves; all while trying to turn Bar Harbor into their new feeding station. There are werewolves from all generations too. Just fascinating! This book has a lot of layers and is very enjoyable. It keeps werewolves and vampire’s interactions current and convoluted as well as “human.”
